Sight Words: look, out, for

A stream is a body of water that flows from a high place (upstream) to a low place (downstream). A healthy stream provides different habitats for different living things. Each animal in this booklet has a habitat provided by the stream.

Scuds need shallow water with lots of plants and small animals to eat and places to hide. Snails need large rocks where a mat of algae can grow. Mayflies need rocks that match their colors so they are camouflaged while they gather food. Minnows need clear pools where they can hunt for food and flee quickly from larger fish. Caddis flies need shallow, fast water over stones (riffles) where they can string their nets to catch food. Mussels need deep water over sand or mud, where they can dig in so only their feeding siphons show. Crayfish need rocks big enough to duck under while they are looking for food
